Catrin in Wales – Mabel Esther Allen (1959)

Catrin has just finished school, and before starting a promising career in London she decides to travel to her mother’s country of Wales.

Despite  her father, her step-mother, her half-sister, and her best friend’s confusion, Catrin embarks on a trip to explore the Welsh countryside.

When her walking tour takes a sudden turn Catrin finds herself in the middle of a barren Welsh valley, with people she does not know, in a scary priory, with disagreeable animals.

I love this book. I read it every year. Often twice a year.

The part of me that has run off to live in strange rural places loves this book. The romantic at my core loves it too. Despite the fact that it was written in the late 50s, it's surprisingly light on sexism and gender stereotypes you often find in writing of this time period.
